Polly Pockets with murder (aka Greek Tragedies)

November 29, 2012

Just finished Herakles by Euripides, also known as Heracles Mad, and I had an epiphany: all of the Greek tragedies that deal with households being destroyed are just Polly Pocket toys with murder.

We only see the front of the house during most of the play. Then what happens? Someone walks into the house to their doom. Then we hear screaming and someone comes out to describe the horrors that have just transpired. Finally the latch on the lid opens and the house reveals its bloody secrets, physically opening up on the stage like a dollhouse to show the grisly scene.

Heracles was fantastic and I couldn’t put it down. Hope to post on it tomorrow because it is dang good.

Tiny plastic people murders!
